A Question For You?

If you are an active member, what do you think of the redesigned Pattern Review site?

I don't like it :-(

Now, I am not a huge fan of changes with respect to technology. I didn't mind the old site but that could be because I navigated about 85% of the time from my phone. The new site is ok on a desktop and kinda meh and difficult from my iPhone.

I have been on their WAAAAAAAY less than I am normally.

I know that I can't begin to image the work that goes into a project like that so I don't want to "complain"...but . Super, super sadface.

So, what are your thoughts?

ETA: Read MaryMary86's reply! That's how I feel! Often times, when I need to say something slightly critical, in written form, I filter it through my friend who is a wordsmith. I do not have good words. Only bluntness. Thoughts --> attempt to filter -->words. Mary more accurately described what I think!

(also, I have a humungous, mega colosal FabricMart order coming today. Yummy photos tomorrow!)

I didn't put the suite number in my shipping address and my FabricMart order is delayed! WAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's pretty early and the Fed Ex rep thought it could be redelivered today. We'll see. :(

  1. Well one thing - you aren't shy about your opinions! *LOL* Two - the site was so long overdue for an update that anything is better than it was. I think if you take some time and work through the site, you will become accustomed to it. It really needed to be updated so that it will continue to draw in new sewists.

    1. Well, yeah! :) I see no benefit in tip-toeing around things!

I know there was a ton of aggravation over the layout and color scheme. People DESPISED the color scheme it seems! LOL!!!!!!

  2. So far I like it. I wondered for the longest time if they were ever going to update. I think the main page is easier to navigate and overall it has a more appealing, welcoming look. I haven't actually viewed it from my phone yet or posted a review. Hopefully it'll grow on ya. I know what you mean though. I don't like ( and still don't) the newest flickr update. :(

    1. OMG Flickr. No. No. No. I was never a huge fan and now I use it about 10% as much as I did before. Bleh.

IMO making everything drop down is great when you're navigating from a desktop computer...much less so when you're mobile.

  3. But what are the updates?

It takes more clicks to see "unread posts" - annoying. It's harder to search now. The overall design hasn't really changed (same colors - just more of the light shade - same graphics - etc.)

I can't find my favorite feature now (Best Patterns of Year XXXX).

My eyes hurt trying to read the forums. I had to change the size to keep the font from looking broken. It's all too spread out now.

I've been posting a lot as I'm currently obsessed with sewing but if I had to bet, my money is on traffic going down.

I'm with you Nakisha - I know they worked so hard and I don't want to complain. I was so hoping it would be more like Ravelry ....

It's a shame because the basic content on PR is fabulous (at least I think so).

    1. I agree with all of this. It's just harder and that white is harsh on the eyes.

  4. Aha! I thought it looked different. This is exactly how I felt about the last major Gmail redesign ... but it has since grown on me. I think any re-design which is drastically different creates some friction for awhile, but I bet it will grow on you. PR is too useful for you to stay away. ;)

    1. I know...I'll come to accept it. But I don't know about "liking" it! :)

  5. The problem is that the site really needs more than a cosmetic update, it needs major functionality improvements. Even little stuff like there's no next button to go on to the next page of reviews, you have to page through by number, I can't believe that's never been fixed even though people have been asking for at least the three years I've been on the site.

To be honest, I'm totally indifferent to the changes. I don't find it any better to navigate, but I don't find it any worse, particularly. It's just differently bad.

    1. I definitely do not think that it is any worse!! But I just don't know how much of an improvement it actually is.

  6. I made a pattern review account a couple of months ago but I haven't used it at all because I found the site so overwhelming and pretty difficult to navigate. definitely outdated

I'm going to go back and check it out now after the upgrade. Hopefully it is easier. but I hope that vets like you don't STOP using it because your knowledge is def important!

  7. Oh I don't know about vet!! Just a rabid user ;-)

IMO there's nothing out there for sewing like pattern review. It really is invaluable.

  8. The site desperately needed some updates... it looked/navigated like something from 2001. I think I was a bit more excited when they made all the review photos larger, that really helped me view them easier-- this made the site more functional for me. I've only used the new version on my laptop (I don't own a fancy cell phone by choice-- it's basically a Jitterbug-- so I don't use the web via cell.) I was curious how the layout was for iphone users and phone people. The jury is still out for me on the new changes... I'm ok with them thus far, but I've hardly been using it this week.

  9. I guess I'm kind of indifferent. I didn't really have any bad feelings towards the last version as long as I was able to view reviews. I guess since it serves its purpose for me - the way it looks doesn't bother me.

  10. Count me in with the group who is just happy to see the site finally get updated and incorporate some mid-2000's-ish features like dynamic menus. I know that Deepika and co. have worked really hard on this--I was beta tester on a previous not-released site update over a year ago, and this is an improvement over that.

I like the cleaner layout and find it easier to read what's actually on the screen. That said, I'm hoping that this re-design is just an increment in an overall project to get the site more on par with what we see in other online communities in 2014. Here's what I'd like to see in the future, if more updates are made:
    * A mobile app/mobile version of the site.
    * Revamped pattern rating system (this has undergone a few updates over the years, but I'd rather see a 1-5 star style rating, with the option to check boxes for things like "Easy and great for beginners, Great wardrobe builder, etc.)
    * Completely do away with, or if it must stay, revamp the "star rating" system for individual users. Do what other review sites do and simply have a "Was this review helpful?" question with a "Yes" or "No" option at the bottom of each review. If a reader clicks, "No", then open a dialogue where they can explain what was missing from the review to make it helpful.
    * Let users add a pattern company themselves and let those additions be moderated (if needed), rather than having to submit a request to get a new company added.

  11. I also think the site was due for an update. I am a desktop user so from my perspective looks fine. I believe with time and feedback more improvements will be made to make the site even better, especially for moblie users.

  12. I think the update looks better than what it was. As far as useability goes, that remains to be seen. I am still getting used to learning where everything is. I imagine I will catch on as time goes on...

  13. I actually like it. I have only been active on it though the last few months, though I have been a member quite some time.

  14. I'm not as active as I used to be, but I do search reviews and read the message boards. The home page is less cluttered, which is nice. But I agree with westmoon: I think the general functionality can be improved.

  15. I was a beta tester. Before, I just...could not get past the pink and brown colors and the truly junky tabs. I had to reenter the site all the dang time to get from section to section, and forget trying to add a review or update one. I can't read colored type on a colored background. Your orange on tan type...uh, no. Can't see.
Now, some of the functionality is better, some of it is still getting worked on. Don't know about the smartphone experience. It's a big improvement for me. A lot of broken pattern links (multiple entries for the same pattern) still need work, but I think that's something users need to be careful with.

If you consider how much Deepika has tried to do with this site, and don't take Ravelry into consideration (the pinnacle of sites in my eyes), it's pretty great. There are probably too many moving parts, in all honesty, but I give her HUGE props for the enterprise.

  16. Well I agree with those of you that hate the stark white. I think another color should have been used (IMHO). Also, definitely not easy to navigate using iPhone. Using your desktop is ok but will take some getting used to. So for right now...not a fan but maybe in time.

  17. I think anything new takes time to get accustomed to (we are creatures of habit after all) but I do think the new site is a vast improvement on the old.
I agree the white is a bit too stark but the content is nicely laid out & I find it refreshing. - all of this when working on desktop...I havent tried in on my phone as yet. Give it some time x

  18. I'm not an avid user of Pattern Review. But, I think the new site make-over will actually make me more willing to go there and participate. The old site was a mess to navigate and confused me. I was never really able to figure out where everything was and how to use the features. So far, I like what I'm seeing.

Hopefully, if there are specific things that enough people want 'fixed' the site keeper will be willing to take those ideas into mind and make some adjustments.

  19. Cosmetically I think the site looks fresher. The problem for me is that I can't get the "Forums" drop down menu to drop down from IE V.8 which is my only option while browsing at work. I don't have the time to browse through the individual categories looking for new posts. Without access to the "active topics" link that is hidden in that drop down menu I am spending very little time there. I did email Deepika that info so hopefully it will end up on the radar at some point.
